It's mostly about melee combat, and you can either jab or swing your fists around, as well as doing the same with various weapons themed after the location you're fighting in. One of the most important, and well done I might add, elements of Paint the Town Red, is the combat system. Killing pirates with an AK is definitely not a fair fight, but it is pretty funny. There are also some fun modifiers you can add, such as zombie mode or 'oops all machetes' to spice things up a bit, but the main point is to kill everything before it can kill you. As you can probably guess, they're different variations of places where people can get drunk, and then prison thrown in for good measure. These brawls take place across 6 different levels, 5 if you don't include that level that's just a night version of one of the others, each themed after a different place where a huge brawl would conceivably take place. Indeed, the first mode that pops up when you boot the game is just that, a brawling mode that challenges you to start, and then survive, a huge brawl with sometimes upwards of 70 different combatants at a time. Most of the advertising material points towards the game being, as I described it above in a half-arsed sort of way, a 3D brawler. The main thrust of the game is sort of hard to land on in all honesty. Paint the Town Red has been in Early Access since 2015, and 6 years later it's finally ready for prime time.

A game that takes full advantage of voxels, perhaps a little too much, is Paint the Town Red, a 3D, first-person brawling game (sort of) that's fresh off of Early Access. For a while, voxels became a bit of a buzzword in video games, appearing on the front page of every new indie release hoping to go viral on YouTube or Twitch. They've given games like Minecraft the tools they need to produce their worlds and have added some spectacular abilities to the wheelhouse of rendering in video games. This games always take the risk of entertaining you for a while and then boring you.Voxels are a great tool for gaming. The final result will depend on whether the rest of the levels will be diverse enough so it's premise won't stay as a anecdote.

Promising violenceįor now, Paint the Town Red is a promising game. It's strange to hit characters that in theory should be monkeys. But on the other hand, there's blood, beheaded heads and nonstop violence.

On one hand its style will remind you of the sympathetic Minecraft. Its graphics won't leave you indifferent. If you're waiting on a full game, I would recommend you to wait for its release. There still are missing weapons, modes, achievements. If you don't improvise or adapt to the situation, you're dead.Īs of now Paint the Town Red has only two levels. If you don't use the objects around you, you're dead. Once the violence is unleashed you have to act fast. Then everyone will hit each other and will end up going after you. Everything will remain normal until you decide to harm someone (Smacking somebody, for instance). All levels start the same way: you are in a apparently normal environment, like a bar or a retro dance club.
